Latin American Regional Meeting Report: Working Together to Improve Access to Healthcare in Latin America

Last October IAPO held a Latin American Regional Meeting in Buenos Aires , Argentina and we are delighted to now share the report from this event. The regional meeting was held in both English and Spanish therefore we have developed the report as a bi-lingual tool for patient groups in Latin America.

World Thalassaemia Day – 9 May 2010

Ijaz Ali, Founder and Chairman of the IAPO Member, Hamza Foundation Welfare Hospital and Blood Services, Pakistan, has shared information on work that they have done to mark World Thalassaemia Day. The work included a seminar and walk to raise awareness of the condition and its prevention.

Polish Diabetes Association Conference – Hajnowka, Poland – 29 May 2010

On May 29 2010, the Polish Diabetes Association organized a diabetes conference in Hajnowka, East Poland, entitled: “Polish Diabetes Association, medical corporations, and healthcare in the fight with diabetes complications”. IAPO Member Representative, Andrzej Bauman, President of the Polish Diabetes Association has shared further information about this event.

 

World Heart Rhythm Week (WHRW) – 7-13 June 2010

World Heart Rhythm Week (WHRW) is the annual global event organized by IAPO Member, Arrhythmia Alliance (A-A) based in the UK and held in partnership with International Cardiac Pacing and Electrophysiology (ICPES). The A-A have called the event an unprecedented success and have shared some of the weeks highlights, in the following article, including a world record and European public survey.

 

European Medicines Agency (EMA) Patient and Consumer Working Party (PCWP) – London, UK – 16 June 2010

IAPO Governing Board Member, Albert van der Zeijden and IAPO Member Representative, Rod Mitchell participated recently in the June meeting of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) Patient and Consumer Working Party (PCWP). They have prepared a report for IAPO Members both in Europe and the rest of the world.

 

World Sickle Cell Day – 19 June 2010

Ruth Nankanja Mukiibi, Chairperson and Founder of IAPO Member, Sickle Cell Association of Uganda has written an article about their work to honour World Sickle Cell Day in June this year. The Sickle Cell Association of Uganda is a non-profit, non-governmental organization (NGO) that was founded in 2000 to represent the interests of sickle cell patients and their families. It advocates for the rights and responsibilities of affected persons and they work hand in hand with health workers and different stakeholders to improve the quality of care for sickle cell patients. They also provide education and counselling to sickle cell patients and their families about home care management.

World Alliance for Citizen Participation (CIVICUS) 9th World Assembly – Montreal, Canada – 20-23 August 2010

Ella Fearon-Low, IAPO’s Capacity Building Director will be attending the 9th CIVICUS World Assembly in Montreal, Canada in August. The overall theme of the World Assembly is 'Acting Together for a Just World'. This theme will be explored in 2010 through the focus theme of 'Seeking out Solutions: Economic Justice'. Cross-cutting themes of development effectiveness and climate justice will add to the debate, which will include the perspectives of women, indigenous groups and the youth. The World Assembly is a primary convening event for civil society, but also includes members of government, business, donors and the media.

 

World Sexual Health Day – 4 September 2010

The 4 September 2010 is World Sexual Health Day, organized by the World Association for Sexual Health (WAS). The purpose of this day is to encourage discussion and recognition of sexual health as an integral part of overall health and to demonstrate that people have the right to discuss sexual matters and to access information and resources. World Mental Health Day – 10 October 2010

Yoram Cohen, Board Member of the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH) and the Vice President for the IAPO Member, Global Alliance of Mental Illness Advocacy Network (GAMIAN Europe), has shared information on World Mental Health Day 2010 which will take place on 10 October. The global theme of the day is “Mental Health and Long Term Illness: The Need for Continued and Integrated Care”. The purpose of the event is to raise public awareness about mental health issues worldwide and promote open discussions on illnesses, as well as investment in prevention and treatment services.
